Contemporary Bathroom Design Ideas

Contemporary Bathroom DesignDo you dream of a luxury, contemporary bathroom design with a glorious centrepiece bath and gleaming taps. But not sure how to achieve it, don’t despair.

You don’t need loads of space or a huge budget to realise your dream.

With just a little careful planning and knowing where to buy you too can have the modern bathroom you always wanted.

Designing your bathroom

You will hear this repeated many times throughout our website. The key to any successful design is in the planning. Always put lots of thought into your layout and design. Play with your ideas before settling on your final design.

Once you have fitted your new bath or shower it is very difficult to move it!

If you are thinking of moving your toilet, bath or basin to a new position consider your plumbing and outside drainage. If you are unsure always get advice from an experienced bathroom fitter or plumber.

Take a look at our Bathroom Design and Planning page for more useful tips.

The Bath

Contemporary BathTry, if you can to make your bath the centrepiece of your contemporary design.

If it’s a freestanding bath ideally you want to place it about 10cm from the wall. Choose a design with clean lines – leave claw feet and slipper baths to the traditional bathroom.

If you don’t have the space for a free standing bath don’t despair. There is a really good choice of modern baths available in a choice of materials, the most popular being acrylic and steel enamelled, either way you should find a good selection perfectly suited to our smaller bathrooms.

But where do i buy? B & Q good selection, or alternatively, try specialist retailers like Bathrooms.Com and World of Baths.

The Perfect Basin

Contemporary BasinThe bathroom sink is a very personal thing. You need to choose a size that fits your space. Do you want his and hers basins?

If you need storage – as most bathrooms do, particularly if you want to maintain a minimalist feel. Keep it simple, look at wall mounted furniture especially if you are tight for smaller bathrooms as it creates the illusion of space. There are some nice wood finished available, light oaks and wenge finishes are very popular, like these from Bauhaus bathrooms.

For us a contemporary basin has got to be clean in design (no frilly upstands or shell designs!), rectangular in shape with either very sharp square sides or soft curved edges like a D shape. Smooth in design with some wall mounted taps and a simple mirror or cabinet above.

The Big Bathroom Shop and Bathroom Heaven have some excellent designs available.

A Luxury Shower

Contemporary ShowerAny contemporary bathroom needs a shower with the WOW factor.

A walk-in shower if you have the space is perfect because it is simple and uncluttered. Or try to use a frameless glass enclosure with a simple hinged door or if room allows a simple fixed glass panel.

Use a low profile shower tray or even a tiled wet floor. Just make sure you use a high flow shower waste or gulley otherwise you may experience “puddling” (standing in a puddle of water while you shower).

To cap it all off a nice minimal shower valve with a luxury drenching shower head. We usually recommend a hand shower as well. These are far more practical for those hard to reach places and cleaning the glass!

Try Tapstore.Com for shower valves and Bathrooms.Com for a good choice of shower trays and enclosures.

The Ultimate Taps

Contemporary Bathroom TapsYou are going to need the ultimate taps to truly cap off your contemporary design. Floor standing taps for the bath, if you have the space. Or some really minimalist wall mounted bath taps – but don’t forget functionality and include a hand shower they are ideal for washing the kid’s hair and perfect for cleaning the bath.

If you have a basin on a worktop or piece of furniture think about wall mounted taps rather than a tall mixer, it’s clutter free, easier to clean and maintains the clean lines of a contemporary design theme.

Remember to keep the design simple with nice single lever controls or a clean crosshead design. Maybe look at a nice waterfall spout tap, but make sure it is a clean design and wherever possible select everything from the same range so it matches throughout your entire bathroom.

Think about the quality of your taps, they do need to be the most expensive, but avoid the cheapest. Remember your taps, alongside shower valves are the products with working parts and you don’t want the chrome peeling off either!

For a good choice of Contemporary taps try Crosswater or take a look at these basin mixers from Bathroom Heaven.

What about the toilet?

Contemporary ToiletFor the most desirable design and to create a focal point use a wall hung toilet with a support frame. Geberit frames are the most popular and they have a very good selection of flush plates that will complement most design schemes.

Not only is wall hung neat and clean in design, it adds to the overall feeling of space and most important of all it is very hygenic. Easy to clean around, under and behind – especially if the wall is tiled.

For that extra touch of class use a soft close toilet seat.

If you can’t accommodate a wall hung WC then a close coupled toilet with clean, simple lines is a must and always use a dual flush push button cistern, a must if you want to save water.

Take a look at Cooke and Lewis from B & Q or Bathroom Heaven for some nice contemporary bathroom design pieces.

Wall and Floor Finishes

Contemporary TilesKeep the mix simple, the contrast between light and dark tiles or combining dark tiles with light painted finishes can work very well. But remember to keep the design clean and simple. We don’t want a wild splash of colour – leave that to the fun, family bathroom design.

Light, natural stone finshes like travertine or limestone can work very well, particularly if you are tiling the whole room and then using your furniture to add addional contrasting colour to the room. For the largest choice take a look at Topps Tiles and Walls and Floors.co.uk.

If your feeling very adventurous you could consider polished plaster finishes, for example Marmorino. This would deliver a truly stunning seamless finish to your contemporary design.

Finally, coloured glass panels can offer a real alternative to tile and painted finishes. Easy to clean and available in a wide choice of colour options. But make sure you use specialist glass companies like Glass Express or Decoglaze.

The Finishing Touches

Contemporary AccessoriesNo bathroom would be complete without those finishing touches.

Don’t neglect your lighting, get that wrong and your bathroom will feel like a dark and gloomy place. Consider lights above your mirror, or a bathroom cabinet with lights. Careful planning and positioning of spotlights in your ceiling will ensure a bright and successful design.

Bathroom accessories must be a clean, simple design. But don’t over do it – you don’t want hooks and rings hanging all over the bathroom. A contemporary design should be clutter free and everything should have a home. Here are a few bathroom accessory ideas.

And last but not least your bath linen – there is nothing better that getting out of the bath or shower and wrapping yourself in a big sumptuous, soft bath towel. For the best of bath linen and towels take a look at John Lewis, M&Co. and Heals.
